The Crooked Fiddle Band are a no-holds-barred instrumental tour-de-force.
Finding the common ground between eastern euro folk fiddling and frenetic punk, between crystal clear Scando/Celt tonalities and post rock builds, their sound is thoughtful, visceral and ecstatic. Violin, bouzouki, double bass and drums deliver a whirlwind show that takes audiences on a journey through the band’s warped imagination.
Enter their world of epic soundscapes, where folk melodies, monumental post-rock build-ups, cinematic battle scenes and their teenage punk roots collide to create an ecstatic style. They called it ‘chainsaw folk’ once as a joke but it stuck, even though their ARIA-nominated 2019 album Another Subtle Atom Bomb deals with the band’s fears and hopes around climate change. Violinist Jess Randall and her quiver of bows take the audience from sweet laments to silent film soundtracks to face-melting punk shredding and back again in a show that’s been called “an irresistible force of nature” (The Australian).
